My last post reminded me of a retail store I did quite a while ago, a jewelry store on 57th Street in Manhattan called Jaded. The space for the store was very narrow but rather tall and our client was a jeweler who created Etruscan inspired pieces. To cope with the 9′-6″ width and the small size (350 sf) I came up with a concept where the doors for the display cases lifted upwards instead of opening out. The display cases ended up being built out of tempered glass and combined to create an arched internal space where you walked. I balanced the display doors with a counterweight of stacked glass which are connected by cables over glass wheels producing a totally balanced system where you could open each case just with a single hand. The material pallet was kept to a minimum. We used glass, encaustic finished walls, brass hardware, rough sisal carpeting and a triptych painting that covered the back wall. The store was very successful and stayed open for many years.
